9de77857a6 ENH: add surface patch index to surfaceCheck output
- makes it somewhat easier to find a correspondence of patch names and
  patch index (for paraview)

16591012e9 ENH: add -verbose option to surface conversion, cleanup
- by default, reduce the amount of output

ENH: support default text description for -verbose option

- simplifies use in more places.

27c2cdc040 ENH: vector mag(), magSqr() methods - complementary to dist(), distSqr()
ENH: use direct access to pointHit as point(), use dist(), distSqr()

- if the pointHit has already been checked for hit(), can/should
  simply use point() noexcept access subsequently to avoid redundant
  checks. Using vector distSqr() methods provides a minor optimization
  (no itermediate temporary), but can also make for clearer code.

ENH: copy construct pointIndexHit with different index

- symmetric with constructing from a pointHit with an index

STYLE: prefer pointHit point() instead of rawPoint()

779a2ca084 ENH: adjust fileName methods for similarity to std::filesystem::path
- stem(), replace_name(), replace_ext(), remove_ext() etc

- string::contains() method - similar to C++23 method

  Eg,
      if (keyword.contains('/')) ...
  vs
      if (keyword.find('/') != std::string::npos) ...

5a121119e6 ENH: add -verbose support into argList
- similar to -dry-run handling, can be interrogated from argList,
  which makes it simpler to add into utilities.

- support multiple uses of -dry-run and -verbose to increase the
  level. For example, could have

    someApplication -verbose -verbose

 and inside of the application:

    if (args.verbose() > 2) ...

BUG: error with empty distributed roots specification (fixes #2196)

- previously used the size of distributed roots to transmit if the
  case was running in distributed mode, but this behaves rather poorly
  with bad input. Specifically, the following questionable setup:

      distributed true;
      roots ( /*none*/ );

  Now transmit the ParRunControl distributed() value instead,
  and also emit a gentle warning for the user:

      WARNING: running distributed but did not specify roots!

b060378dca ENH: improve consistency of fileName handling windows/non-windows (#2057)
- wrap command-line retrieval of fileName with an implicit validate.

  Instead of this:
      fileName input(args[1]);
      fileName other(args["someopt"]);

  Now use this:
      auto input = args.get<fileName>(1);
      auto other = args.get<fileName>("someopt");

  which adds a fileName::validate on the inputs

  Because of how it is implemented, it will automatically also apply
  to argList getOrDefault<fileName>, readIfPresent<fileName> etc.

- adjust fileName::validate and clean to handle backslash conversion.
  This makes it easier to ensure that path names arising from MS-Windows
  are consistently handled internally.

- dictionarySearch: now check for initial '/' directly instead of
  relying on fileName isAbsolute(), which now does more things

BREAKING: remove fileName::clean() const method

- relying on const/non-const to control the behaviour (inplace change
  or return a copy) is too fragile and the const version was
  almost never used.

  Replace:
      fileName sanitized = constPath.clean();

  With:
      fileName sanitized(constPath);
      sanitized.clean());

STYLE: test empty() instead of comparing with fileName::null

12c91b9472 STYLE: check autoPtr as plain bool instead of valid()
- cleaner code, more similarity with unique_ptr

  Now
      if (ptr)
      if (!ptr)

  instead
      if (ptr.valid())
      if (!ptr.valid())

9af3f85cf9 STYLE: simplify short-circuit involving autoPtr (#1775)
- with '&&' conditions, often better to check for non-null autoPtr
  first (it is cheap)

- check as bool instead of valid() method for cleaner code, especially
  when the wrapped item itself has a valid/empty or good.
  Also when handling multiple checks.

  Now
      if (ptr && ptr->valid())
      if (ptr1 || ptr2)

  instead
      if (ptr.valid() && ptr->valid())
      if (ptr1.valid() || ptr2.valid())

31b172217c ENH: support predicate checks for argList (similar to dictionary methods)
- Favour use of argList methods that are more similar to dictionary
  method names with the aim of reducing the cognitive load.

  * Silently deprecate two-parameter get() method in favour of the
    more familiar getOrDefault.
  * Silently deprecate opt() method in favour of get()

  These may be verbosely deprecated in future versions.

1310e85225 ENH: support 'get()' for retrieving argList options

181c974b11 ENH: improved sample surfaces and surface writers (#1206)
- The writers have changed from being a generic state-less set of
  routines to more properly conforming to the normal notion of a writer.
  These changes allow us to combine output fields (eg, in a single
  VTK/vtp file for each timestep).

  Parallel data reduction and any associated bookkeeping is now part
  of the surface writers.
  This improves their re-usability and avoids unnecessary
  and premature data reduction at the sampling stage.

  It is now possible to have different output formats on a per-surface
  basis.

- A new feature of the surface sampling is the ability to "store" the
  sampled surfaces and fields onto a registry for reuse by other
  function objects.

  Additionally, the "store" can be triggered at the execution phase
  as well

1d85fecf4d ENH: use Zero when zero-initializing types
- makes the intent clearer and avoids the need for additional
  constructor casting. Eg,

      scalarField(10, Zero)  vs.  scalarField(10, scalar(0))

345a2a42f1 ENH: simplify method names for reading argList options and arguments
- use succincter method names that more closely resemble dictionary
  and HashTable method names. This improves method name consistency
  between classes and also requires less typing effort:

    args.found(optName)        vs.  args.optionFound(optName)
    args.readIfPresent(..)     vs.  args.optionReadIfPresent(..)
    ...
    args.opt<scalar>(optName)  vs.  args.optionRead<scalar>(optName)
    args.read<scalar>(index)   vs.  args.argRead<scalar>(index)

- the older method names forms have been retained for code compatibility,

1fc2a73213 ENH: use meshedSurf API for surface writers (issue #104)
- Allows passing of additional information (per-face zone ids) or possibly
  other things, while reducing the number of arguments to pass.

- In sampledTriSurfaceMesh, preserve the region information that was
  read in, passing it onwards via the UnsortedMeshSurface content.

  The Nastran surface writer is currently the only writer making use
  of this per-face zone information.
  Passing it through as a PSHELL attribute, which should retain the
  distinction for parts. (issue #204)
